HELLO, MY NAME IS MATT THOMAS .
MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE CANDIDATE, 2021
Samuel Mockbee said that “it’s not about your greatness as an architect, but your compassion.”
For me, practicing architecture means wielding thoughtfulness, attention, and creativity; that allows it to be a service for others.
As I challenge and develop my own design abilities; I’m striving to explore how architecture can speak beyond its immediate setting, propelling broader ideas about community and environmental engagement. My design approach is informed through observation, interaction, and research, emphasizing a balance between responsive and insightful ideas.
In my work, I enjoy creating spaces that celebrate identity through materiality and light. These moments, shaped by iterative studies, evoke an identity that can be impressionable and support inhabitants. Working diligently as a team player, I’m eager to design for these ideals, as a deliverable for ourselves, and our communities.
I am grateful to receive Portland State University’s 2018 Iterative Study Model Award, and the 2020 Master of Architecture Writing Prize.
